Butterfly Gala Colouring Techniques

Hello and welcome to my blog today.  At my class on Saturday afternoon we made a collection of butterfly cards using the Gingham Gala suite.  While I was preparing the cards for the event, I considered the different ways that colour could be applied to the butterflies and I thought I'd share some of them with you.

The range is quite varied and you can pick the technique that appeals to your particular style or the supplies you have on hand!

For the first technique, simply stamp the butterflies on to coloured card using black ink.  Punch out, and you have two coloured butterflies!

The second technique simply switches the ink to one that matches the coloured card stock.  This gives a more subtle colour to the butterflies.

Next, I stamped the butterflies on to thick Whisper White card using Black Memento ink and coloured with Stampin' Blends.  I picked colours from the Gingham Gala papers: Highland Heather, Balmy Blue and Daffodil Delight.  I'm not sure if there is a butterfly species with this colourway, but it was quite therapeutic to do!  I used the bullet tip to colour as some of the sections are rather small, and I felt had more control that way.

The Stampin' Write Markers were the next medium I used.  This time I stamped using Black StazOn and I used the same three colours.

Next I switched to using ink from the ink pads - squish a little ink from the inkpad onto an acrylic block and use that as a palette.  You could of course use a drop of reinker.  I picked the colour up with a blender pen and coloured in the wings.

I also tried picking up the colour with my Wink of Stella pen.  It works just like an Aqua Painter, with the added advantage of sparkle!  You could of course use an ordinary Aqua Painter instead.

Watercolour pencils don't come in exactly the same colours, so I used: Pacific Point, Lemon Lime Twist and Daffodil Delight, again with Memento Black ink.  Different shades can be achieved depending on how much pressure is applied while you are colouring.  An alternative look could be achieved by blending with either a Blender pen or an Aqua Painter.

The stamp set comes with some solid stamps designed to fill in the wings.  The stamps are photopolymer and easy to line up within the outline.  I stamped off onto a scrap piece of paper before stamping into the wings so that the colour was light and subtle.

The final technique uses daubers to apply the ink from an ink pad to the butterflies.  I saw this idea suggested by another demonstrator, Patty Bennett.  I love the way this turns out.  It looks quite messy to start with, but as soon as you punch out the shapes all you are left with is pretty butterflies!

One colouring technique I haven't tried yet is the Brusho crystals.  I am sure that they would give a unique finish each time.

Which look do you prefer and which technique will you try first?
