Snowy Scenes Suite for the New at SU! Blog Hop

Hello and welcome to my blog. Today, I am participating in the New at SU! blog hop. We are a group of Stampin' Up! demonstrators from around the world who are full of creative papercrafting ideas to share with you to get you crafting. We are highlighting the use of Sketches and showing that they are a Crafter's Secret Design Tool! The Stampin' Up! Annual Catalogue devotes a whole page to the art of card design, and includes 22 awesome card sketch ideas. You can see them on p22!

When the creative juices aren't flowing, a sketch is often a good starting point to get back into crafting. I was so happy to see that there are a whole new bunch of sketches in the September - December Mini Catalogue, and there are designs for cards and tags! For my project this month I have chosen to use the Snowy Scenes Suite and I was drawn to one particular sketch because the layout made me think about snow globes!

I would not have thought about creating a Christmas card using Petal Pink, but I was driven to use non-traditional colours by the pastel shades on the DSP. The snowflake pattern is both pretty and delicate and I enhanced it with some splattered Wink of Stella droplets.
The images are super cute so, I've squished the sketch by reducing the height down to make a cute square card.

To follow the sketch I chose to create the central banner by utilising the largest shape from the Nested Essential dies - it's split through the middle to elongate it so that it protrudes either side of the globe. Rather than using the globe die from the Snowy Wonder dies I chose to use one of the Stylish Shapes circles. The size and scale is more appropriate for my card, and the stitched edges tone with those on the banner.

Three die-cut circles create the background for the snow globe: Pool Party to give the hues for the sky; embossed vellum for the falling snow and embossed Basic White for ground cover. Tearing the Basic White gives the illusion of a snow drift.

The little scene is built with a stamped and die-cut penguin standing in front of a thicket of trees and a scattering of snowflakes. Additional sparkle comes in the form of Iredescent Faceted Gems, and when the light catches them, and the Wink of Stella, it looks magical. Finally, the sentiment is white heat embossed on to the die-cut snow globe base.

After completing my card I was taken aback to discover that not only had I followed a sketch from the catalogue I had also created a card that resembled one of the samples included alongside the suite. I used similar products, but the colours are different! It is either a case of great minds think alike or my subconscious brain was working overtime!

Anyhow, I hope that you have been inspired by my project today. Continuing along the hop to the others will provide you with even more project ideas using sketches - you are currently with me, Furry Cat Designs by Karen Henderson - but before you hop on to the next post, please take a moment to leave a comment. We love reading your comments!
